Each auction starts with a low initial price - $0.10, for example. It is set to end within a limited time. The basic idea is that auction participants pay a small amount of money for each bid. Every placed bid increases the price of the item by a small fixed amount ($0.10) and adds 10 seconds to the auction clock. The person who is the top bidder when the auction clock runs out is the winner. They get to purchase the item at the final auction price, which is most often a very attractive discount.
